PROFILE

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1973 beginning with the Pre-University course. B.Sc., Chemistry was intiated in the year 1974. Mrs. Radha was the first Head of the department. Mrs. N. Shanmuga Parvathy rendered her untiring service to the department right from its inception and with great foresight contributed to the success of the department, followed by Dr. P.G. Seetha lakshmi who carried out the mission effectively.
Many towering personalities, Mrs. Vedha, Mrs. T. Ratnamoni and Mrs. K. Ananthavalli who led the department and helped to gain a firm foothold to par excellence by their indefatigable work. Besides many University ranks that were bagged by our students, many of them have been placed in reputed Organizations, Industries, Colleges, Schools and in various sectors, especially in the cadre of Scientists in National Institution CFTRI.

National Seminars and National Workshops - A number of seminars and workshops were conducted regularly. Eminent Professors from various Universities, IISC were invited.
Notable Events
Science Exhibition - Two exhibitions (1991&1997) were conducted. The response from the public and students was appreciable.
• In-Service Training Programme for School teachers was conducted from 27.01.2005 to 28.01.2005.
• Industrial Chemistry as the vocational subject was introduced in the year 1995, a special training programme on ‘Industrial Chemistry’ was given to the faculties by K.C. College, Bombay.
• In collaboration with Regional Testing Laboratory, ‘Industrial oriented training’ was given for B.Sc., Industrial Chemistry students.
• To arouse and explore new vistas in Chemistry, and to create awareness about the opportunities to women students in the field of Science, we joined hands in the celebration of International year of Chemistry - 2011 by organizing seminars, various Inter Collegiate competitions in the areas of Environmental protection, Energy resources and Contributions of women to Science.
• In 2013, M.Sc., Chemistry (Un-Aided) was introduced.
Awareness Programmes
• A Special Rally was organized with 800 students marched on 8th January 2002, to create awareness among the public about the dangerous effects of indiscriminate disposal of one time usage plastic.
• One day Health Awareness Programme on the occasion of Manivizha celebrations of our president Shri. A.P.C.V. Chockalingam was conducted on 24.01.2006
• In connection with Ruby Jubilee celebrations of Our College, Health cum Initiative Programme “Live and Let Live” was organized in association with Global Hospitals and Health City, Chennai.
Eminent Doctors and specialists from various fields were invited.

2. Mrs. K. Sarada has completed a UGC - Minor Research Project entitled to “Phytochemical Profile and Pharmacological evaluation of ethnomedicinal plant Naringi crenulata (Roxb) Nicolson (Rutaceae)” (F. MRP-3691/11(MRP/UGC-SERO)
3. Mrs. H. Kohila Subhathra Christy is carrying out a UGC - Minor Research Project entitled “Studies on toxicity anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, anaesthetic and wound healing activities of Phallusia arabica” (F. MRP-4218/12 (MRP/UGC-SERO)
4 .Almost all teachers have undergone orientation and refresher courses in various Universities

Shunmugapriya, presented a paper on “Total flavonoid & phenolic content in a simple ascidian phallusia nigra” Mrs.S.Sankara vadivu, on “Nutritive value of a coplonial ascidian Ecteinascidia, venue Meenakshi ”, and Ms.C.Stella Packiam, on “Studies on the chemical constituent of a simple ascidian Ascidia sydneiensis” at Second International Conference of “KAAS – 2013 at Sree Ayyappa College for Women, in Kanyakumari and Mrs.H.Kohila Subathra Christy participated in it on 21.09.2013. Dr.D.
