DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
B.Sc., degree course in Zoology was introduced in the year 1979. Right from the initiation of the department the academic achievements by the Zoology students has been appreciably excellent. Some of the students seemed to be the shining beacons of our department .The department feels proud to record the names of the University rank holders at this moment of commemorating the success of 34 years of service. A total of 17 students have secured University ranks in these years.
Mrs.V.Gandhi Mathi was the first Head of the department .She served for 25 years continuously from the beginning till 2004. Dr.Mrs.N.S.Vijayalakshmi followed her and served as the second Head of the department. She headed the department for nine years.
Dr. Mrs. V.K.Meenakshi is a notable and remarkable researcher and a Scientist. She is been the crown of the department . She has completed 3 Reasearch projects and two research projects are on going. Evenafter her retirement from the academic teaching service she is actively and intensively concentrating in her research activities in the research laboratory of Zoology department which was inaugurated last year.
1.Studies on few aspects of Ascidians – Taxonomy, Biofouling , Bioindicators and Economic importance – UGC Funded Project.
2.Marine Biodiversity. Taxonomy of Ascidians funded by MOEF (Ministry of Environment and Forests).
3.Screening of a few chosen Ascidians of Tuticorin coast for antimicrotial activity - UGC funded project.
1.Studies on some biomedical compounds from the Ascidians of Tuticorin coast-UGC Funded project.
2. Studies on Toxicity, Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic, Antipyretic , Analsthetic and Wound heading activities of Phallusia arabica.
One Ph.D. research scholar was awarded Ph.D.degree under the meticulous guidance of Dr. V.K.Meenakshi.
Two M.Phil students were awarded under her guidance. Two of her research Scholars are awaiting Viva-voce, She is Serving as Co-Guide for Ph.D. research scholars.
The department has conducted Two National level seminars and Two state level seminars. Recently , a seminar on Marine Conservation was conducted in Septemper 2013, on the eve of 40th anniversary of A.P.C. Mahalakshmi college.
Mrs. Muthukani .M the present Head of the department serves as the NCC officer for six years since 2007.
