A two day national seminar on “Anthropological Research: A Multidimensional Approach” was organized by Internal Quality Assurance Cell of A. P. C. Mahalaxmi College for Women, Thoothukudi in association with International Institute of Tamil Studies, Tharamani, Chennai on 3rd August and 4th August 2022 to provide deep insights about anthropology, to emphasise the importance of anthropological research and to study every aspect of human existence.
Thiru. K. Ramesh, Deputy Director, Office of the Commissionerate, Welfare of Non Resident Tamil and Rehabilitation Department, Chennai, Mr. A. V. Sathish, Scientific Officer from Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant, Dr. Kalpana Kandasamy, Senior Consultant, Anesthesiology cum Critical Care, Chennai, Dr. V. R. Pavithra, Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts and Culture, International Institute of Tamil Studies, Chennai were the Resource persons.
The two day seminar began with the welcome address of Dr. S. Banumathi, Head and Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of Tamil followed by lighting of the lamp by our Principal Dr. P. Bala Shanmuga Devi and the chief guests.
The Principal also graced the occasion by her felicitation address and honouring the chief guests.
On behalf of the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Chennai, Dr. Pavithra honoured our Principal by presenting a memento. Dr. Pavithra introduced the theme of the seminar by briefing the concept of anthropology and insisted the participants to give importance to education. The inaugural session came to an end with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. T. Lilly Golda, Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college.
The first session of the seminar started at 11:15 a.m. with Mr. Ramesh who delivered a speech on the topic “International Migration: Aims, Challenges and Difficulties”. Mr. Ramesh gave a detailed information about the assistance offered by and the activities of the welfare of Non-Resident Tamil and Rehabilitation Department to protect Indians who go abroad for employment purpose.
The second session was taken over by Mr. A. V. Sathish at 2:00 p.m. who addressed on the topic “Nature, Science, Technology and Human Development”. Mr. Satish made the session informative and enthusiastic by explaining the importance of developing science and technology by considering the negative effects of both, advising the students to use scientific temper. In addition, he also gave information about nature inspired technologies and the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
The second day of the national seminar began with the welcome address of Dr. T. Lilly Golda, Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell on 4th August 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
The resource person Dr. Kalpana Kandasamy, Senior Consultant, Anesthesiology cum Critical Care, Chennai gave an excellent and understandable presentation on the topic “Approaches to Medical Anthropology”. She focused on the three theoretical approaches that exist in understanding human health.
Dr. V. R. Pavithra took over the last session of the two day national seminar at 11:15 a.m. by delivering a lecture on the topic “Social Anthropological Research”. She insisted the participants to conduct research in the field of social anthropology in order to find the ways in which people live in different social and cultural settings across the world. Dr. Pavithra also motivated the students to do more projects related to the other branches of anthropology like archaeology, biology, culture and linguistics.
Faculty, research scholars and students presented their research articles in ICT halls.
Certificates were distributed to all the participants and Dr. S. Mary Suba Selvarani, Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Tamil proposed the vote of thanks.
Totally, 184 students, scholars and faculty from various colleges attended the seminar.
The arrangements for the seminar were made by the members of Internal Quality Assurance Cell, faculty of PG and Research Department of Tamil and History.
